Cats are big in Hackney. From the opening of a cat cafe to yesterday’s top story on Twitter about a reunion between an elderly couple and the cat they thought they had cremated, our feline friends have a special place in the hearts and minds of people in Hackney.
Since last year, you can now see where all the cats of Hackney live. I Know Where Your Cat Lives is an experimental data project by Owen Mundy, an associate professor at Florida State University, that visualises the locations of 1 million cats worldwide using geolocated posts on social media websites.
Hackney cat lovers can zoom in on the interactive map to see where the borough’s moggies are.
While highlighting serious privacy concerns about social media, it also gives you an easy way to admire the cuteness of Hackney’s cats.
You can take a look at the map here, but in the meantime here are some of the adorable cats we found through the project:
Blue eyed beauty
This siamese cat with piercing blue eyes can be found chilling on a tiled floor on Amhurst Road in Shacklewell.
The acrobatic tabby
Performing a death-defying feat of balance, this cat be seen on Sandringham Road in Hackney Central.
The safari hybrid
In the depths of Hackney’s concrete jungle lives a feline of the wild. On Goulton Road in Hackney Downs is a cat that looks remarkably like one of its fiercer relatives.
The adored one
The cat love is strong with this one. This feline on Almack Road in Lea Bridge receives a lot of affection from its owner.
The…who the hell knows
Is it just a pancake with a hole in the middle, or maybe DIY Lion King fancy dress? Who knows what the owner of this cat in Stoke Newington was aiming for with this picture.
